I thought I would say somerthing here about what motivates my work as a photographer and artist; I think everyone should try to use the skills and talents they've developed to give back in some way that hopefully is of value to others. For me my goal has been to document cultures that are threatened by an oncoming tide of globalisation and technology. Ancient cultures and ways of life across the globe are being wiped out, sometimes in a generation, as technology binds us closer together and has a homogenising effect on the way we all live our lives. Some of my contributions have been to document the unique but disappearing customs and cultures of the tribes of the Oma valley of Ethiopia, as well as the people of the Sepic region of Papua New Guinea. Photographing the First Nations people of northern Canada and documenting their struggle to adapt while at the same time hold on to their identity has been part of this process also. My work in communist Cuba, shooting everyday portraits of the people there, is interesting because they give us an insight to our recent past as cuban society has remained relatively untouched by globalization since the early 1960's. I continue to persue these themes in my personal work with the hope that I will leave behind a body of work of some interest and value for future generations. |
